GCF is excited to execute the project to install a 20,000 liters water purification system in Roche-a-Bateau that will provide clean drinking water to at least 9,000 people in Roche-a-Bateau, a coastal town located in South Haiti. Access to drinking water is a key factor in the fight against the spread of cholera in Haiti. GCF has partnered with Catholic Relief Services, (CRS), LifeGivingForce(LGF) and UCS, to install and maintain the water distribution center.
GCF's team worked with the town's mayor and community leaders to implement this much needed project. Given that the site selected does not include an existing kiosk, the project scope was increased to build that Kiosk. To help defray that cost, GCF successfully submitted a funding proposal to Catholic Relief Service which has approved and disbursed the funds to build the distribution kiosk. The kiosk is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of October 2011.
GCF hired a local contractor to dig the well. Already, crystal clear water is flowing from the community's new well. The community's first reaction was to drink the water right out of the well. When asked why are you drinking water from a source that has not been purified? Rranko, Fabiola and Andy's (3 children from the commuity) replied that the water from the well was far better than their current source of water, which is a spring that is nowhere near as clean as the water from the new well.
Once construction is completed, LifeGiving Force will install the water purification system and train a staff to maintain the center. In order to maintain the system and the distribution center, the community will sell 5 gallons of water for 25 gourds.
There are at least 12 other communities in the same area that can benefit from a project that brings access to clean water. GCF will execute this project as a pilot that can be utilized to obtain funding for other towns in the area with no access to drinking wate.
This project can benefit from a solar energy system that will cost an additional $4,000. If you wish to contribute click here
