Earthquake Response Plan
Thank you so much for your support and your compassion towards the victims of the last earthquake that devastated the South of Haiti. We've formulated a response plan for this disaster that will vary based on our fundraising results and priorities.
On The Ground
On Saturday, August 14, 2021, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti’s southern peninsula affecting the South, Grand-Anse and Nippes Departments. The following Monday, Tropical Depression Grace dumped 2 inches of rain per hour, with 35 mph winds on the shelterless victims. As of 8/21/21, the reported death toll stands at 2,207. Additional reports include 12,268 injuries, 344 missing persons, 55,953 destroyed homes, 77,006 damaged homes and 650,000 people in need of humanitarian assistance. The disaster struck as Haiti was already reeling from a COVID-19 pandemic and a sociopolitical crisis, creating an even more volatile environment for the people of Haiti.

Gaskov Clergé was a man with a zest for life who lived every moment to the fullest. Born in Les Cayes, a coastal city located on the southern tip of Haiti, he was quick to laugh, but was serious in his dedication to helping others. He was an intellectual with a great love of science and a champion soccer player. He was deeply committed to his family, his roots, and the people of Haiti.
After beginning his education in Haiti, Gaskov’s intellectual drive led him to the United States. Here, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Agronomy and then a Master’s in Microbiology from Howard University. He was a Ph.D. candidate in Food Microbiology at Howard, doing research for the FDA when, on March 7, 1999, he died suddenly and unexpectedly from liver cancer. He was just 39 years old.
Gaskov’s sudden passing left many mourning hearts. His superior academic achievements, exemplary sportsmanship and his love for so many people, regardless of their racial, cultural and economic background are Gaskov’s legacy.
The Gaskov Clergé Foundation was established by his family and friends to empower individuals in the areas of sports, education, health and life sciences—subjects that were Gaskov’s passions. This organization and the important work we achieve are a testament to Gaskov’s incredible, multifaceted life.

Laboratory at Klinik Fonfred
The Gaskov Clergé Foundation (GCF) is a nonprofit and philanthropic organization established in 1999 to promote health, sports, education and sciences in both the United States and Haiti. GCF is committed to empowering individuals and has been carrying out its mission by: Establishing domestic and international programs and scholarship funds to provide financial support to deserving individuals in their pursuit of academic excellence and to further their interest in the sciences.
Since 1999, GCF’s medical missions became the main source of medical care for many who can’t afford to see a doctor. Until 2015, GCF led many medical and relief missions that offered free health care and medication to an average of 2,000 under served patients in the region, many of whom traveled from the most remote areas. We have provided financial assistance for several life-saving surgeries in Haiti and we are now operating Klinik Fonfred, a standard medical clinic in a rural community near Les Cayes, which features four exam rooms, a triage area, a dental clinic a lab, pharmacy and radiology room. The staff at Klinik Fonfred has fulfilled over 30,000 patient encounters since its inception in 2015.
As I reflect on our 22-year journey of community service, I am humbly reminded that the cause that Gaskov Clergé represents is far greater than one individual or one organization. This journey exemplifies the power of true collaboration coupled with a deep faith and trust in God’s plan. It is the story of delivering exceptional results with extremely limited resources. It is your story that you have contributed to over the years to empower individuals by giving them access to healthcare, education and sports.
